Overview of Turnitin.com

Turnitin.com is a technological tool that (a) permits faculty and students to ensure that work submitted is original in nature, and (b) protects student work by preventing infringement on the work from occurring.  Once a student paper has been submitted to Turnitin.com for an “originality check,” the paper becomes part of Turnitin.com’s database so that others are unlikely to infringe upon the work.  However, copyright and ownership of the paper continue to belong to the original student author.  In addition, privacy and confidentiality is highly valued by Turnitin.com, and student information and work are never disseminated to others.  Turnitin.com makes Transformative Use of student work in that the work is being checked for originality by Turnitin.com rather than being used for its original purpose (such as an assignment or research).
